SHELDON School was named as one of four academic institutions in the UK to be selected as a finalist for the School/College of the Year in Prince Charles' Industrial Cadets Awards.

Science teacher Thomas Oxenham attended the finals in London on March 7 to receive recognition for make the final of the programme, which aims to get more students involved in science and engineering and help bridge the gap between schools and engineering companies.

Mr Oxenham said: “We were thrilled to attend the awards ceremony and meet Prince Charles. Although we weren’t the ultimate winner, it’s a huge honour to be selected as one of only four schools across the UK.

"This shows Sheldon’s commitment and passion to open our pupils’ eyes to the possibilities of engineering and give them the skills they need to go out into the work place.

“The award was to recognise all our students who have successfully completed their engineering projects. It was a humbling and enjoyable experience to meet the Prince and talk to him about the engineering schemes and how they have really helped our students.”

The school was nominated by EDT, the charity foundation which runs both Engineering in Education Scheme and Go4Set, for its contribution to giving students opportunities in engineering.
