THE tenants of the under threat Cavalier Pub in Devizes announced this week that they are move to The Bell by the Green in the town centre.

Members of an action group set up to save the Cavalier in Eastleigh Road, Devizes were delighted last week when the town council backed their protest against Wadworth plans to knock the pub down and replace it with houses.

At the time James and Tricia Blake said they had not yet made up their minds about a move to The Bell. But this week they said: "As many are aware we have been offered the fantastic opportunity to run The Bell by the Green. After long and careful consideration we have decided to take it.

"This has by no means been any easy decision for us but we have to do what we feel is best for our family. We would like to thank all of our customers for their support over the last ten years, you are all much appreciated and we hope to see many of you whether it’s occasionally or regularly and of course our existing pool, darts, skittles and football teams are more than welcome to join us."

The brewery's planning application for seven homes has been called in by Wiltshire Council and will be decided by the eastern area planning committee.

Last week Richard Read from the newly set up Cavalier Conservation Group made an impassioned plea to councillors to back the fight to save the pub from the bulldozer.

He said: "The Cavalier is not just a pub. It is a community hub, a place where family and friends meet regularly making it one of the busiest pubs in town."
