HORRIFIED residents in a quiet Pinehurst cul-de-sac face a fresh fight to get rid of an unsightly caravan – just a month after one, that had stood in the street for 15 years, was removed.

People living in Fir Tree Close say the new eyesore appeared last week but as it is not breaking any laws, many are dismayed at what action can be taken to remove it.

A 39-year-old resident, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “The old caravan that had been there at least 15 years got moved back in December but now a new one has appeared.

“It has no lights on it so when you are driving or reversing out, you don’t know what is coming around the other side. It is such an eyesore.

“It is falling apart and we just think it sits there storing rubbish and was probably done to annoy the neighbours again.

“When the last one was removed we thought everything had finished and it was behind us but then this one turned up without any warning.

“The other one was out at the front of the house for 15 years and then it was finally moved after months, if not years, of residents complaining about it.”

Back in 2014, the Adver reported on how Swindon Borough Council wouldn’t be taking any action on moving the old caravan in Fir Tree Close despite it being covered in mildew, taking up half the road as well as being an eyesore.

At the time, as no law was being broken, it was hard for anything to be done about it.

But after residents continued to complain to both their ward councillors and the borough council, the caravan was eventually moved last month.

Labour councillor Des Moffatt, who covers Rodbourne Cheney, said he will be looking into this new complaint.

“We had a resident contact us on Friday afternoon regarding this new caravan but there is a considerable backstory,” he said.

“The complainant this time has said the resident has parked their caravan in the same place from 10 years ago and used it as a store room. It became a derelict eyesore and it took three years to persuade the council to take action.

“My instinct is that we cannot take immediate action. Someone is entitled to park a caravan for a short time on an ordinary road. What we can’t allow to happen is for people to use a part of the road on a permanent basis so we will be looking at the problem next week.

“This is a new caravan that seems to be road worthy and there is little we can do in the short term until we know more.”

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman was unavailable to comment on whether they would be taking any enforcement action.
