THE opening of a new health club in Broome Manor will be brilliant for the town, say Golf Club members.

The comments come after a planning application was submitted to the council for a swanky new health and fitness centre on the site of the Broome Manor Golf Complex.

Jeremy Sturgess, chairman of Twigmarket Ltd, the leaseholders of the site, said: “I am very excited about these plans. When we have spent so much time on something it’s great to see it all come together.”

The Broome Manor Club is to be a 35,000-square foot health, fitness and wellbeing facility, which will also serve as a National Centre of Excellence for squash.

It will have an operating capacity of around 4,000 members and employ between 30 and 40 members of staff.

Earlier this year, a consultation seeking the views of residents and members took place. It gave people the chance to look at the plans in detail and submit feedback forms.

Jeremy said: “We had more than 100 people attended the public consultation and they were very positive about the plans for the health club, and excited about the idea of having these brilliant facilities.

“It’s all part of the plan to broaden the revenue streams of the Broome Manor Golf Complex, and this is the realisation of that.

“It’s going to be great for Swindon and for our members, it’s just what we need.”

The club will also contain four studios which include the main group fitness studio, a yoga studio and a spin studio equipped to offer the latest digital and highly competitive indoor cycling experience.

The design statement reads: “Swindon and Wiltshire desperately need a premier health and fitness club.

“Following the recent closure of the South Marston Hotel and Leisure Club, Swindon has suffered from a lack of quality health and fitness clubs. Instead, it has seen an influx of budget gyms. The Broome Manor Club should not be compared to these.”
