FOOTBALL fans must make public safety a priority when they turn out for Swindon Town’s Boxing Day match with Luton Town.

Police are asking supporters of both teams to make sure the Christmas fixture goes ahead without any trouble, and that people of all ages can enjoy the game in a safe and comfortable environment.

Superintendent Adrian Burt, match commander, said: “We are working closely with our partner agencies, including Swindon and Luton Football Clubs, to ensure Boxing Day’s game goes ahead with minimal disruption and that it is a safe and enjoyable experience for all. We hope to reduce the impact of the game on the local community as much as possible.

“We are expecting a larger than average number of supporters, both home and away, on the day. Because of this, the public may well notice an increase in police officers at the ground before, during and after the match as we aim to keep everyone safe.”

Fans have been reminded that there will be no Great Western Railway services in operation on Boxing Day, and that planning their journey in advance and allowing plenty of time for travel is a good idea.

Police have also asked people only to carry essentials as fewer bag searches will speed up stadium entry.

As the fixture is a 3pm kick-off, supporters are encouraged to get to their seats as early as possible due to a near sell-out crowd expected.

Superintendent Burt said: “As is normal practice, officers will be wearing Body Worn Video (BWV) during the event which will help in assisting any investigations that may be carried out, should we experience any trouble on the day.

“It is important to note that National Rail has announced there will be no trains running on Boxing Day which will no doubt affect a lot of people’s travel plans – please be aware of this and plan your journey well in advance so you don’t miss out.

“Most importantly, we want everyone to enjoy themselves – please support us in ensuring this is a safe event and one that all ages can enjoy.”
