FROZEN food was left to thaw out over a four day period at a Co-op in Corsham after their freezer broke, according to a business owner in the town.

John Parker, who owns a gallery nearby, said staff put a notice on the freezers saying that the food was not fit for human consumption on Sunday and that the smell coming from the store has put shoppers off.

"People keep coming into my shop complaining about the Co-op," he said. "There's always a problem there and it has really gone downhill.

"Food was left on the floor last week, food was left in the freezers and customers were told it was not fit for human consumption and it was like that for four days.

"Quite often there's not enough stock on the shelves for people to do their weekly shop either.

"It's shocking really. It's the only one in the town and with the bank gone too, people are starting to shop out of town. We have all noticed how quiet it has got here and it's wrong."

Andrew Hall, who runs the Martingate Centre with his father Bill, said: "We have concerns about the store and we are trying to work with them to resolve those issues and to make sure Co-op offers what the town actually needs."

The Co-op has been contacted for a comment.
