DIABETES sufferers must get the winter flu jab to protect themselves against an increased risk of catching the flu and serious illness like pneumonia, leading charity Diabetes UK has said.

Last year a quarter of people with diabetes did not get the jab despite it being free for everyone with the condition through the NHS.

The influenza virus changes every year and doctors are poised to react to the symptoms that this year’s strain will cause.

Matt Robert, of Diabetes UK, said: “It is essential everyone with diabetes has the flu jab this winter.

“If you have any concerns about having the vaccination then please speak to your GP or healthcare professional.”

Flu makes it harder to manage diabetes because it destabilises blood sugar levels and in turn can increase the risk of developing serious complications such as amputations, stroke and kidney disease.

People have been urged to get the vaccination done as quickly as possible to be prepared ahead of the winter months.

The flu jab is one of 15 healthcare essentials that every person with diabetes is entitled to through the NHS every year. Others include having blood pressure measured, having eyes screened for signs of retinopathy, and having feet and legs checked.
