A CHIPPENHAM man is in a critical condition following a gas explosion that took place at a flat in Market Place on Thursday night.

A cordon currently remains in place around a building in Market Place, Chippenham, today following an explosion.

One man, a resident of the flats, sustained severe burns and is currently in a critical condition in Morriston Hospital, in Swansea.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to the scene – a series of flats above a shop – at approximately 6.20pm along with firefighters and paramedics.

"Structural engineers have attended the scene today and are assessing the extent of the damage and are making the building and surrounding area safe.

"The police cordon will be removed later this afternoon but fencing will be put in place closing the Shambles side of the building because this alleyway is currently not safe.

"We are working closely with partner agencies to ensure residents are provided with temporary accommodation and are kept updated regularly in relation to the safety of the building."

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation but is believed to be linked to the gas supply. Enquiries are continuing.
