A new Retirement Living development in Marlborough set to launch this November has officially been named Canning Place.

McCarthy and Stone, developers of the forthcoming development on Granham Road chose the name in tribute to William Canning, the designer for the iconic Marlborough White Horse which can be seen on Granham Hill.

William Canning, who was a pupil at Mr Greasley’s academy, designed the Marlborough White Horse in 1804. The horse, which is one of many to be seen around Great Britain, but which is actually the smallest of its kind in Wiltshire, was marked out and cut by Canning, along with other pupils, and cleaned-up every year by the school until 1830.

Caldwell, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone Southern, comments: “William Canning is a well-known figure in the local area for his contribution to the Marlborough White Horse in the 19th century, which still remains in good condition today. We hope naming our new development in his honour will be widely seen as a fitting tribute.

“McCarthy and Stone is looking forward to becoming an integrated part of the community in Marlborough, and we believe this latest prestigious development will play a real part in helping to bring friends and family together in later life – something we feel is incredibly important and will bring many positive benefits to the area.”

The development, which is currently under construction, will consist of 27, two bedroom apartments, with landscaped gardening and on-site parking.

Aimed exclusively at people aged 60 and over, Canning Place will provide luxury Retirement Living, as well as independence in a safe and secure environment. It will have an array of services and amenities nearby and is located less than 400m from Marlborough High Street.
