SWINDON has been ranked one of the best places to work in the UK.

Glassdoor, one of the world’s largest jobs sites, has unveiled the results of its newest jobs report to identify the 25 best UK towns and cities to work in for 2017 - with Swindon coming in fifth place.

Slough claimed the top spot, closely followed by Manchester and Cambridge.

The list is compiled by ranking UK towns and cities with the highest Glassdoor score, determined by weighting three factors equally: how easy it is to get a job (hiring opportunity), how affordable it is to live there (cost of living), and how satisfied employees are working there (overall job satisfaction).

Hiring opportunity was determined by the ratio of active job openings to population. Cost of living was calculated as the ratio of median annual base salary to average home value in the area. Job satisfaction ratings were based on at least 80 company reviews, written by local employees on Glassdoor’s website over the past year.

In Swindon's case, the town was rated 3.9 out of five for job prospects with an overall job satisfaction rate of 3.4 out of five.

Glassdoor say the median base salary for people is £31,000 while the most popular positions are maintenance engineer, account manager and facilities manager.

The median home value is £248,514.

Other nearby cities that made the list include Oxford which was ranked 10th while Bristol came in just outside the top 20 in 22nd place.

Mark Di-Toro, at Glassdoor, said: "It's no surprise to see Swindon up from 10th in 2016 to 4th position this year. Unemployment levels are consistently some of the lowest across the country. It’s also one of the fastest growing towns in Europe.

"Swindon’s fantastic road and rail links make it ideal for commuting, giving businesses access to a wider range of employees from surrounding areas such as Bath and Bristol."
