Lord's cricket ground hosted a historic match to mark Marlborough College’s 175th and Rugby School’s 450th anniversaries by hosting a match between their top teams in the grounds.

Pupils walked out onto the home of cricket in London and played in front of crowds including fellow students and family, with Marlborough defeating the Warwickshire school by 25 runs.

Local boy Dave West, 18 from Baydon, scored his first half-century for Marlborough, going on to score 58 not out before taking 6 wickets and removing the Rugby Captain in the first over when Marlborough took to the field.

The sixth former, who will receive his A-level results for Maths, Biology and PE this week, said: “It was the perfect ending for the school year because many of the other guys who played are also my best friends.

“It was surreal to walk out onto Lord's pitch and the crowds were so positive it was an amazing atmosphere.

“To begin with I couldn’t really think about the occasion because I was focused on the fact that we were trailing. But when Max Read and I walked off the pitch after playing we looked at each other just said wow.”

The cricket enthusiast attended Baydon Primary school and St John's in Marlborough before studying in the sixth form of the college.

Father Simon West added: “It wasn’t until we were there that we really realised what a big deal it was for the boys to walk out onto that pitch.

“The boys all got a lot out of it and there was a great sense of camaraderie.”

The match took place on Saturday afternoon and was organised to commemorate the landmark anniversaries of both schools, with Marlborough coming out victorious and winning by 25 runs.
