DEVIZES car wash owner Gent Jakupi says that he wants people in Devizes to know that his business is back up and running after police and health and safety inspectors swooped on his business.

Albanian Mr Jakupi said: "We were only closed for a day but a lot of people think there are still problems. I have been here for ten years but some people still seem suspicious of us and want to think the worst."

He is also upset that people think his much loved dog Patches is not well looked after. He said: "She is a fantastic dog and I take her running with me over Salisbury Plain every evening.

"She used to wander about but people were worried about her so now I have to keep her on a long chain. She is a husky so is used to being outside. She wouldn't want to be cooped up in the office all day."

He said that when she was a puppy he spent 5,000 euros at a vet to save her life when she needed an emergency operation. He said: "I just told the vet to do what he had to save her."

Mr Jakupi and his newly appointed manager Rob Gerrish say that the car wash employees come from Romania and have the right to work in England.

During the visit by the Health and Safety Executive and Wiltshire Police's Human Exploitation and Emerging Threats team concerns were raised about working conditions and a breach of electricity regulations was found.

Mr Gerrish said: "We called in an electrician the same day and we were back open the next day. Until we get a certificate approved we are using a generator for the electricity."

He said that some employees had been living in two caravans at the back of the car wash but the business was now to rent a house instead for employees and lease the back part of the yard to a company that has a contract with Google Maps.

Mr Jakupi said: "All of our employees are paid the living wage and the ones that stayed in the caravan had free rent as well."

He now wants to become involved in town business associations. He said: "I have lots of ideas for events and want to do my bit for the town.
