A GRANT of £2,000 has been made by Devizes Town Council to help pay for the replacement of old CCTV equipment in the town.

Cameras in the Brittox and outside the National West Bank in the Market Place and there are worries they could soon fail. But it is hoped by Devizes Development Partnership that £6,000 can be raised to pay for new equipment to be installed.

Members of the community and civic resources committee were told that a grant of £2,000 could also come from Devizes Area Board.

Committee members agreed to make the grant and also to relax conditions on the partnership that would allow it to reduce its £5,000 reserve to £3,000 that would make it possible for it to make its own £2,000 contribution to the cost.

But the committee wanted more information before it would agree a grant towards the cost of a piano to be used by Devizes Eisteddfod. Members were told the new piano, which would be in the Cheese Hall of the Town Hall, could be used by other groups but a report said: "It should be noted that whilst the application indicates that the piano is for the use of all groups using the Cheese Hall. Historically, other than the Eisteddfod itself, there has not be any demand for a piano in that room although there is space."
