THE wonderful world of science was celebrated at St John’s Primary on Saturday with the return of the Trowbridge school’s annual summer fete.

More than 500 people headed to the school for their Go Bang day, which included a planetarium dome in the hall, chemistry shows, interactive stalls, hovercraft rides and hands on science lessons from the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution.

On top of that there were giant bubbles, a toddler zone, face painting, a bake off competition, Wiltshire scrapstore crafts, performers and much more, all of which more than £4,000 towards the school’s outdoor learning projects.

Every year the school put on the fete but with a different theme each time round and PTA member Nicola Hughes was thrilled that the children took to the science day so well.

“We always like to make our fete’s extra fun, colourful and also a bit different. This year’s Go Bang was a huge hit. If you can get the children to learn about stuff whilst enjoying themselves, then it is a win-win,” she said.

“We are so pleased with how it turned out as it took a fair amount of organising, led by Sharon Buxton and Mike Reese. People could not get enough of our inflatable planetarium, where the children lay on mats and looked up at our night sky.

“That along with the slime making, liquid nitrogen and scientific ice cream making, made for a whacky and wonderful day.

“Now we can use these funds towards building an outdoor kitchen, building shelters and planting trees at the bottom of the school field, which is very exciting.”

Headteacher Frank Toner said: “It was a wonderful day, with a great community atmosphere and it was all down to our brilliant PTA, who did a stellar job in putting this all together. We have been desperately unlucky with the weather before but this time we got lucky.”

“In previous years we have been desperately unlucky with the weather, where we have been completely washed out but this year, thankfully, we were treated to a fair amount of sun which attracted hundreds of people.

“There were some really great things for the kids to get stuck into once again, it really is a great day out.”
