HISTORY was brought to life over the Bank Holiday weekend as cavalry men and women, toting muskets, pikes and swords charged into battle for a English Civil War reenactment in Malmesbury.

Thousands of people gathered in Charlton Park on Sunday and Monday to watch as the Sealed Knot Society put the spotlight on the 17th century conflicts between the Roundheads and the Cavaliers in a gripping and dramatic performance.

A spokesman for the Sealed Knot Society said: "Those who attended the English Civil War event organised by the Sealed Knot Society at Charlton Park over the Bank Holiday weekend where given a stunning spectacle with over 1,500 men and women fighting on the battlefield.

"Guns blazed, cannon roared and the clash of pikes, the cries of the wounded and shouts of encouragement could all be heard by the large crowd who gazed in awe as Cavalry charged and the clash of swords made our ears ring. History was brought to life."

The Society, which was formed at a book launch in 1968, comprise of volunteers who pride themselves on sharing their historical knowledge with the general public in an inventive and accessible format. Living history tents were also set up in the park to educate visitors about the trades of the times with skirmish and drill displays.
