TWO decades of transporting people in need from one place to another was celebrated at the 20th anniversary party of the Marlborough and District LINK scheme.

More than 80 people, including volunteers for the charity and locals, attended the afternoon tea party which was held at the Wesley Hall in Oxford Street and included live music, photos over the years and refreshments.

Of the many past and present volunteers at the event, the Reverend Canon Henry Pearson, who was the founder of the organisation on May 15, 1997, was also in attendance and he gave a speech about how the local branch has grown over the years.

Councillor Bryan Castle, who is on the scheme's committee, said: "It was a very successful party, with a really good attendance, there was lots to enjoy and everyone went home happy.

"We were royally entertained by the very talented singers Ray Dance and Judith Sharp and it was lovely to see some familiar faces and helpers. I have been involved with the scheme since the beginning and it has been very enjoyable meeting people and getting them to where they want to go. I still do quite a few trips a week. I hope we can get more support to help us out."

Last year the Marlborough and District Link Scheme, which were the second LINK scheme in Wiltshire to be established, covered nearly 4,000, averaging around 30 appointments a day.

The group are calling on people to come forward as drivers, gardeners, electricians and plumbers as well. For more information visit www.marlboroughlink.org.uk
