CHILDREN from Corsham Primary School were introduced to the game of golf and the scientific aspects of course management at Kingsdown Golf Club during a specially created Environmental Open Day.

Twenty-five children from Year 3 joined deputy course manager Tom Freeman, who organised the event, on the green last Friday for a fun day of seed sowing, planting and putting.

"The kids absolutely loved it and we heard one of them say it was the best school trip they had ever been on," the greenkeeper said. "They got really into the activities especially the ecology ones and they asked lots of questions. The golf also went down like a treat and we had one of our professionals and the captain of the whole club taking them for that."

The day was organised by Mr Freeman in the hopes of inspiring children to learn about the importance and benefits of pollinating insects and wildflowers on the course.

He added: "I know they are young but we wanted to highlight the positive links between greenkeeping and golf. Some of the children were really good at golf and came back the next day to join our junior section.

"Hopefully we have inspired these kids to become the next generation of greenkeepers and I am hoping we have establish a community connection going forward with Corsham Primary and they can come back in the future."
