AS a resident of Commercial Road I have always accepted that shoppers, commuters and users of St Mary’s Church can park in the road without restriction as well as residents.
This quite often means that I have to park in Victoria Road, where parking has always also been unrestricted.
However, now that it looks as if the section of Victoria Road nearest to the hospital building will get a residents’ parking scheme, the situation has been entirely changed.
Commuters and shoppers will no longer be able to park in Victoria Road outside the terraced houses so, inevitably, there will be fewer chances for places in the section of Commercial Road opposite number 1-6, and between numbers 34-38 and St Mary’s Cottages.
As a resident of Commercial Road I do not object to restrictions on parking in a section of Victoria Road for residents but feel that parking in part of Commercial Road for residents has to be considered at the same time.
Some residents of Commercial Road will not be affected by the move – there is plenty of parking at Chantry Court for example, and several houses have private parking facilities.
However, for those who are affected, to be left out of this residents’ parking scheme will worsen our quality of life as we will have to spend more time driving around to find suitable places to park after returning from work, or from using our cars for other purposes.
Therefore I call on Wiltshire Council to either combine the two sections of road in the same residents’ parking scheme or that the section of Commercial Road which will be affected by the new scheme have a similar system introduced within the next few months.
