PEWSEY Primary School children enjoyed an eye-opening trip to a local opticians laboratory to bring their studies to life.

A total of 30 Year 5 pupils headed to Haine & Smith Opticians own laboratory, Kennet Optical in Pewsey, as part of their science syllabus where they look at the human body.

The pupils were shown round the facility by optician David Sawyer, where they were able to observe their trained technicians producing patients’ glasses using the latest technology.

To top it all off, the pupils received a sample lens to take home with them.

Year 5 teacher Vicki Spanswick said: "The children really enjoyed their day out. It was to start our topic looking into humans and we thought the opticians was a good way to start.

"It was really interesting to learn about this sort of thing, looking at the inner workings of the eye and the functions of it.

"The work they do there is very impressive. They have a lot of attention to detail and is was enlightening to see how it all works.

"They came back very much inspired, who knows, a few children may want to be opticians now."

The laboratory is exclusively for Haine & Smith patients, has the capacity to produce 60,000 pairs of spectacles a year, but nevertheless ensures that each pair is treated individually.

Haine & Smith have had their own laboratory for the past 30 years and opened the new site in Pewsey in 2007.

Emma Millar, Kennet Optical Manager, said "We were very glad to be able to welcome Pewsey Primary School pupils who were very well mannered, and we look forward to other schools visiting us."
