A BIN scheme has been launched across Chippenham in a bid to crackdown on litter which will allow people to put their rubbish in residential wheelie bins.

Chippenham residents can place a sticker on their waste bin letting people who are passing by know that they can put their rubbish in it, rather than drop it on the floor.

Beverly Walker along with Elaine Massung from litter picking group Off the Ground have launched the trial as part of the Love Chippenham anti-litter campaign which began earlier this month.

“I thought it was a brilliant idea, the bins are already there and it doesn’t cost anything extra,” said Mrs Walker.

“I think what Wiltshire Council are really keen to do if it’s successful is roll it out county wide so Chippenham could be a game changer in the fight against litter.”

A total of 16 people have already signed up to the trial, which will last four weeks, and bins on Marshfield Road, St Paul Street, Malmesbury Road, Sheldon Road, Audley Road, Dallas Road, Spanbourn Avenue and Saint Mary Street have bins with a sticker on them.

Councillor David Powell, who has signed up to the scheme, said: “As far as I’m concerned there’s a culture of litter dropping around and there’s not enough bins.

“It’s to encourage people to use it and also to encourage them to think about what they do with their litter.”

Wiltshire Council are hopefully that if the trial can prove successful it might be rolled out across other towns in the county.
