An award-winning choir from a Calne school has been chosen as just one of 18 to take part in the finals of a choral competition at The Royal Festival Hall in March.

The Chamber Choir from St Margaret’s Preparatory School will compete in London in the junior age category of the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition on March 17.

A first and second place will be awarded and the winning choirs will go on to perform at the Barnardo’s Young Supporters Concerts. The Calne school’s Chamber Choir has enjoyed much success in recent years and in May 2016 was named Wiltshire Choir Of The Year in a contest organised by Devizes Eisteddfod.

At the time, organiser Michael Johnson commented on the standard of all the entries and said judges David Bruce-Payne, Sarah Jefferies and Valerie Hoppé, adjudicators with the British and International Federation of Festivals, were particularly impressed with the Chamber Choir’s performance in the final.

The school, which has a strong music and drama tradition, is now hoping to do equally well in London.

Headmistress Karen Cordon said: "We place great importance on fostering our children’s interest and talent in the performing arts and they are an integral part of the school timetable. I am delighted that our Chamber Choir will be able to perform in such a prestigious event at The Royal Festival Hall."
