CHILDREN from across Chippenham got their running shoes and in the Christmas spirit as they took part in the annual Crazy Crunchy Christmas Cross-Country event.

More than 450 children, many dressed in Christmas themed attire, from 11 primary schools took part in the event which included a visit from Santa Claus.

Those taking part joined in a warm-up session alongside Santa and Roz Chandler from GLOW at Hardenhuish School before completing as many laps of the playing field as possible on Friday.

They were then treated to hot chocolate at Sheldon School, which had been donated by Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Iceland and Tesco.

The event, which was being held for the third year, is organised by the Chippenham Partnership of Schools which includes all three secondary schools in Chippenham – Abbeyfield, Hardenhuish and Sheldon – who work together to provide events for primary schools in the area.

Selina Porter, co-ordinator of the Chippenham Partnership of Schools, said: “The first year we had about 100 children, last year 250 and this year 450 which is fantastic and all the primary schools in Chippenham and the villages are involved.

“We encourage them to wear as much Christmas bling as they can and it’s non-competitive, it’s just for fun.

“It was lovely and everyone had a great time.”

Schools taking part in the event included Bybrook Valley, Frogwell, Ivy Lane, Kings Lodge, Monkton Park, Redland, St Nicholas (Chippenham), St Nicholas, St Pauls, St Peters and Stanton.

Year 4 teacher at Monkton Park Primary School, Helen Hughes, said: “It was absolutely brilliant, it was a fantastic event.

“For the kids it’s a great way to start off the Christmas festivities.”
