BICYCLE shop manager Tom Holden is used to travelling by two wheels but is swapping them for a trusty pair of trainers as he runs the equivalent of 12 marathons this month.

The 24-year-old, who lives in North Swindon and works at The Bike Rooms in Old Town, is undertaking 300 miles within the 30 days of November to raise money for men’s mental health and cancer charity, Movember.

“This is 10 miles every day, which is just short of a half marathon daily, and about 12 whole marathons throughout the month,” said Tom, who is also growing a moustache as part of Movember.

“Last year I rode 1,000 in a month, this year I wanted to step out my comfort zone. I'm not a runner, I haven't trained for this and I haven't even been on the bike for over three weeks.”

Tom’s route has been taking him around Old Town and Coate and he has also been running to work from home. So far he has clocked up more than 30 miles, doing five miles in the morning and five in the evening.

He added: “It isn't going to be easily achieved and right now I'm not even sure if I'm actually capable of completing it myself.

“But if it wasn't such a hard target of 300 miles in 30 days it wouldn't be a challenge. Everyone has doubted me and said it wasn’t achievable but it has spurred me on even more, but they are definitely supporting me as well.

“I feel fine when I run but when I woke up this morning my knees were killing but I think that’s just the shock of running and hopefully it will get easier over the month. I don’t know why I said 300 miles, I said it to a friend and now I’m committed to it.”

Tom also has plans to do more half marathons and the London Marathon in the future. He hopes to raise over £100.

He added: “The real people struggling are the men with cancer and mental health issues all over the world. They're the ones who have the real challenge, not me, so this is simply to raise awareness and to give to them.”
