A HUGE lorry guided by a sat nav down a No Entry road in the centre of Marlborough has made Wiltshire Council think again about its much criticised scheme to stop accidents in Silverless Street.

The latest in a long line of accidents involving giant trucks has helped prompt Wiltshire Council to consider extra measures and it has called on people in the town to take part in a consultation.

The latest idea from the council is to stop traffic turning left into Silverless Street when it approaches from Herd Street.

Marlborough town clerk Shelley Parker also urged people to take part in a survey on the experimental traffic order that is in place at the Herd Street end of Silverless Street.

But photographer Niels van Gijn, who took this picture of the lorry when it got stuck last Thursday, and lives and works in Silverless Street, is not sure that any amount of signs will make a significant difference.

He said: “I was just coming out of my house when I saw the lorry trying to come down the road. It was obvious it was not going to make it. This just keeps on happening and the signs have made little difference.

“The problem is that the drivers rely heavily on sat nav and unless the big manufacturers are persuaded not to show this as a route it will keep on happening.

“There just isn’t room for them down these very narrow roads. They need to be routed differently. A lot of drivers don’t seem to know the area at all and so just follow the sat navs.

“It will be interesting to see if the council takes notice this time, or whether a building has to actually fall down before they wake up.”

The lorry came from haulage company Emms, which is based in Doncaster. This week the firm declined to comment on the incident, in which the old Gazette & Herald office was damaged.

In the past people who live and work in the road have spoken of the dangers of the lorries using the road. One of the most affected buildings has been Dormy House.

Last year it was hit six times by lorries turning from Kingsbury Street into Silverless Street. In October of last year a lorry driver drove into the building, sending roof tiles falling, before carrying on without stopping.

A Wiltshire Council spokeman said: “The Marlborough Community Area Transport Group (CATG) asked us to trial a no entry at the Herd Street end to Silverless Street. An experimental traffic order has been in place since February and we are continuing to monitor its impact.

“We are also considering further measures including a no left turn into Silverless Street on approach from the town via Herd Street and we will continue working with the CATG to address these issues.

“We do welcome people’s comments and they can either make those at Marlborough Town Council or by emailing us at sustainabletransportadmin@wiltshire.gov.uk.”
