A SMALL gas leak in Calne is being dealt with by gas engineers in the Derry Hill area of Calne.

Two fire crews were called to the area at around 11am after residents reported the smell of gas. 

The gas board have since confirmed that a small leak from the main pipe was responsible and that engineers have been on the scene since 12pm. 

Residents in the Derry Hill area are being advised to close their windows and police have also closed Church Road and Old Road including the entrace to Bowood.

Darren Keighley, Wales & West Utilities Gas Emergency services manager for Calne said: “We were alerted to reports of a smell of gas on Church Street, Derry Hill this afternoon (Wednesday 26 Oct) and immediately sent an engineer to the scene.

“On arrival, our engineer found a minor gas leak from a pipe in the road. We are now working to stop the gas leak and repair the pipe. Our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as possible and we anticipate that this work will be finished this afternoon.

“Wales & West Utilities has a team of more than 1000 trained and experienced engineers to help serve the 7.5m people across Wales and the south west of England that rely on its gas emergency and pipeline services.
