COUNCILLOR Seed misses the point in his letter last week branding Calne Labour as Luddites and questioning our democratic right to ask what the council are up to.
We have always supported a professionally staffed and well resourced library. Coun Seed is well aware that opening out of hours whilst staffed by volunteers or opening with no staff except a CCTV system is the slippery slope to redundancy for trained professional librarians.
The councillor gave away his agenda when he asked this question at the Calne Area Board: “Would you want a library staffed by volunteers or no library at all?”.
Councillor Seed’s ideological battle to outsource all council services continued with the abolition of the 11 community librarian posts across all Wiltshire libraries.
The long-term aim of Wiltshire Council, with £50million of cuts to come over the next four years, will be to outsource all so called ‘optional’ services such as arts, heritage and libraries to the voluntary sector.
