CALNE’s Joshua Stoneham was part of a four-strong team who claimed the U15 Blackball International World Championships.

The 13-year-old clinched the world title along with teammates Jake Elmhirst, Krish Patel and Leighton McDonnell in a close 10-8 win over Scotland A in Killarney, Ireland.

Joshua’s dad, Luke joined his son in Ireland for the tournament and was bursting with pride after watching Joshua claim the title.

“I’m proud, it was amazing. The final was quite a tough order because Scotland had already beaten the lads twice in the group,” said Luke.

“They were quite a strong side but the lads have been together now for about 18 months and I don’t think they know when they’re beaten.

“They just seem to be able to step it up, but I was really pleased with the way he held himself. He’s done amazingly well.

“He’s quite steely, you’ve got to have something about you that is a bit different to be able to hold yourself under pressure.”

Joshua, who aims to progress to snooker, was over the moon with his performance throughout the tournament.

Not only did he claim the title in the U15 team event, he also grabbed the crown for the speedball contest, where you race to clear three tables.

“It was just amazing, I can’t describe it I’m just really proud. It’s the best I have played in my life and my favourite part was winning and getting the trophy,” said the Abbeyfield pupil.

“I’m really good friends with the other players and it helped us because we had a good team spirit.

“The speedball is just the fun event but it was good to win because it gave us a confidence boost before the final.”

There was also success for Melksham’s Scott Lloyd who won the doubles specials event and Trowbridge’s Daniel Winfield won the bronze medal in the U23 singles.
