A YOUNG boy from Wilsford has recently finished a 25-mile walk across the Salisbury Plain whilst raising money for his chosen charity.

Fred Hickman, 10, a pupil of Woodborough Primary, decided to take part in the walk with his father Alex after seeing the plight of children in Tanzania on Comic Relief. The pair laced up their walking boots and set off for the 24-hour walking journey round the plain.

Fred said: “It was fun and exciting but my feet really hurt. I have done an 11 mile walk with some people from my village to raise money for the church before. I wanted to do the walk for Kids Aid Tanzania which helps children who live on the street as well as buys malaria nets. I saw something about it on Comic Relief and just thought to myself how lucky I was when these children live like that. I have raised £345 for the charity.”

Mr Hickman, 45, joined Fred on his fundraising adventure, helping to carry the bags as well as take some snaps of their journey in Salisbury, with Fred manning the helm during the walk.

“I was the photographer, Fred put up the tent and even brought a stove to cook on. It went really well, towards the end you could see the concentration on his face, focusing on taking one step after the other. It was really good fun and I am very proud of him,” said Mr Hickman.
