A spirits connoisseur from Box, who has set up her own company to showcase handcrafted gins, has created a vintage travelling gin bar from a horse box to serve spirits across the country.

Holly Bower, 41, who has lived in Box since she was six, came up with the idea for Scout and Sage at the beginning of the year after seeing a revolution in the gin industry with the name reflecting seeking out the best distillers and their knowledge of gin.

"I have been working in the hospitality industry for years," Mrs Bower said. "I was brought up in hospitality and restaurants and I have run different places in Bath and had been doing that up until about 34.

"I just got to a point in my life where I wanted to work for myself and I saw a massive stage in the gin industry, but I wanted to do something a bit different by showcasing smaller distilleries who are making beautiful products and to start my own spirits business."

Mrs Bowers intends to make a gin with a different distillery every six months, making unique and limited edition products that will highlight the crafting and different botanicals used by each distillery and served up from her vintage bar called Margo.

She said: "I bought the horse box in March and I finished the work on it in May. It has been interesting so far and I have been really happy with the response to it, as I did it all myself and I am not a DIY person!

"We also have a much smaller bar that can be taken anywhere and I am getting bookings for gin masterclasses for this as well where people can learn to make their own gin."

Scout and Sage released their first spirit named First Label Gin last Christmas and and their next product, Moor Gin will be distilled by Wicked Wolf in Exmoor, who boast a Taste of the West award with less than a year's trading experience, followed by Spa Gin later on in the year.

Moor Gin will be a London Dry, coupled with ingredients such as meadow sweet and lemon verbena that will be served with a slice of lemon or a basil leaf.

Mrs Bowers added: "When I was working behind bars people would always me what was in their gin, so I have taken the periodic table and created my own version, with all the gin ingredients being listed on the front of the bottle."

Although the hospitality expert hopes to have a gin stocked by shops in the future, gin enthusiasts will have the opportunity to taste her creations at Great Chalfield Manor's at the end of the month and at Brixham's Fishstock festival.
