PEOPLE living near the Station Road car park in Devizes are starting to lose their patience with the 'boy racers' who meet in the car park every evening.

The residents of houses that back on to the car park have made complaints to the police about a number of people who use the car park as a meeting spot, causing a lot of noise, sometimes until the early morning.

Lynn and David Druett, 51 and 54, who live on Station Road just metres away from the car park, have been dealing with the issue for a number of years.

Mr Druett said: “It is guaranteed that every night there will be a group of people there revving their engines and making a lot of noise, usually between 10.30pm and 11pm. We complained years back and we were told about police being down there but it doesn’t seem to stop them. Two or three years ago one person was driving really fast and didn’t make the corner and then crashed. We are worried that one day someone will end up in our kitchen. You can hear them just speeding down the road passed our house.”

Police officers in the town have been working with the Town Council to try and stop the car park being used as a meeting point.

James Twyford, acting sergeant in Devizes, said: “We have sent anti-social warnings through the post to a couple of people we know have been taking part in these incidents. By being proactive and working with the council we are working towards long term enforcement and prevention.”

Some of the residents of The Sidings, the housing estate just off of Station Road, are also feeling the drain of the noise levels, which can go on until the early hours as cars are driven fast around the car park and up and down Station Road.

Evette Parveen, 37, said: “I have reported it before and I know that water bollards were placed down there. It was said that maybe some CCTV cameras would be put up there but there aren’t any yet. A couple of nights ago my boyfriend said it might be worth calling 101.”

Whilst the majority of the homeowners living near the car park have started to make a stand and complain to the police, one resident has said it doesn’t affect them as much.

Gilly Appleton, 65, of The Sidings, said: “Well I can’t say I enjoy it but it doesn’t bother me as much. I believe we should live and let live. There are some fights you just cannot win.”

Members of the Town Council have said they are also taking steps towards trying to resolve the problem after receiving a number of complaints.

Councillor Sue Evans said: “The Town Council agreed to ask Wiltshire Police to attend Community and Civic Resources meetings so we can ask them what can be done about the situation. I have had complaints from Castle Lane and Station Road about how bad the noise is.”
