THE fun folk of Calne made it a carnival to remember at the weekend as crowds of ecstatic residents packed the streets.

The annual carnival, kicked off at 10am on Saturday, with a British Cycling Sky ride towards Chippenham opening the event.

The jewel in the carnival’s crown this year was the animatronic, roaring, T.Rex dinosaur, which could be seen bellowing at the jubilant children delighted to see the 8ft tall, 17ft long beast.

Organiser Tracy Howell said: “The whole town went carnival mad despite the weather. The sun shone from about 8am until 3pm but then the heavens opened.

“It was really rocking and busy from about 10.30am all the way through until 5.30pm in the afternoon.

“The community came out in their thousands and everything went to plan and T.Rex the dinosaur roared his way around the town.

“We had loads of stuff going on throughout the day, with things like circus skills in the market place and the Little Zoo.”

T.Rex made a number of appearances at the carnival before the big procession, which started at Bremhill View at 4.30pm and finished at The Strand in the centre of town 15 minutes later.

With an old favourite in Punch and Judy also showing at various times the carnival was hailed by many as another great Calne event bringing the community together.

“It is a great celebration for Calne,” added Ms Howell. “It is a time that the community comes together and supports each other.

“The team was incredible and the public support was overwhelming as thousands of people came out.”
