TWIN pupils at St Mary's in Calne, born through IVF treatment, have been handed a prestigious international award for their video explaining the process of test tube baby fertilisation.

Alice and Clara Wade, both 15, won the University of Sheffield's Prize for Innovative Use of Technology in Science Learning beating hundreds of other applicants, with their video Test Tube Babes.

As boarders at St Mary’s the two came up with the idea when they heard about the competition and uploaded the video to Youtube.

The twins were awarded £300 and have been invited for a tour of the University of Sheffield.

Alice said: “Being IVF babies ourselves, we thought this video would be a fun and creative way to explore the science behind how IVF babies are created.

“It took two days to film and a further two days to edit.

"We were very shocked at the time we were told as it obviously took a lot of effort and work. We wanted it to strike a balance between fun but to also be informative and I think we did it."

IVF or in vitro fertilisation is the process by which eggs are removed from the ovaries and mixed with sperm in a laboratory culture dish and then returned to the woman’s womb.

Clara said: “When we found out we were test tube babies we did not really understand. Our parents told us when we were ten.

“The most difficult part of the shoot was when we used a papaya as a woman and we had to give it a caesarean section and cut it open.”
