REGULARS at the Crown and Anchor pub in Ramsbury have reached a milestone by raising over £17,000 for Prospect Hospice.

The target of £17,015.54 was raised through the weekly quiz night which takes place at the pub every Sunday. At each quiz the teams competed for the weekly prize, with many winners having chosen to put their prize money back into the pot.

Ray Penny, owner of the Crown and Anchor in Crowood Lane, said: “It is all about giving something back, and supporting a local charity that has cared for many local people over the years. The weekly quiz started when Wendy Sprules ran the pub, and it’s a tradition I have been only too pleased to carry on since I took over.

“The other important thing of course is that people have fun while they are raising funds, supporting a great charity in a great pub. I think about 90 per cent of the people who come to the quiz come every week, and it’s competitive but without being too serious.”

The money raised by the quiz goes towards Prospect Hospice’s care and support of patients and their families in the area, including at the recently-opened Outreach Centre at Savernake Hospital.

Mike Kennedy, community fundraiser with Prospect Hospice, said: “We are so grateful to everyone at the Crown and Anchor for their support for Prospect Hospice. Their success goes to show how easy it is to make a significant difference through fundraising while enjoying a great social scene at the same time. If there were other pubs and clubs in the area that were interested in doing something similar, I would be only too pleased to hear from them.”
