A PUB landlord who has had to put up with months of the road outside his village inn being closed is celebrating its re-opening with a live performance by Jagger.

This is not Rolling Stones front man Mick but his brother Chris who in the past has wowed the crowds at Marlborough Jazz Festival.

Ash Harlow landlord of The Barge Inn at Seend, near Devizes, does not normally stage live music events but he is so relieved that work on a bridge over the Kennet & Avon Canal is at last going to be complete that he asked Jagger to play in the evening on May 14.

Mr Harlow said: "The bridge being closed has affected our trade. But we are just going to put that behind us now and look forward to being back to normal.

"My parents went to one of Chris' gigs and said how good he was so I rather cheekily just sent him an email and asked if he would come to us. I was very pleased when he said yes."

There will be no charge so see Jagger, who worked with such bands as Leo Sayer and has contributed to two Stones albums, perform. Mr Harlow, who runs the pub with his partner Abi Vince, said: "We just want people to come along and enjoy themselves. We will be serving food as normal but we would advise people to book in advance.

"We have been told the bridge will open again on May 9 so this will be a good way to celebrate and get the message out that the road is now open. I think people have been confused about some of the signage in the village which was obviously intended to stop people using the road but it didn't help us."

Food will be served from 6pm and the pub will be open until 11.30pm.

The road and bridge closure was part of a £720,000 project by the Canal & River Trust to carry out repairs to Seend Wharf Bridge. Navigation of the canal was possible from the end of March but the organisation's plans to re-open the road by mid-April has slipped back.

Mark Evans, waterway manager at the Canal & River Trust said: “The repairs we’re doing to Seend Wharf Bridge are absolutely essential. We really appreciate people’s patience while we get this done."
