AFTER weeks waiting for a fixture, Devizes Town recorded their second win in as many weeks on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Almondsbury UWE.

The home side spent much of the game on the back foot but Robbie Mitchell followed up his goal last week with the all-important winning goal.

The result will be another boost to the confidence of Darran Walters’ men, who ended their 11-match winless run against bottom club Bishop Sutton the previous week.

Devizes manager Walters said: “We rode our luck a little bit. They probably think they deserved something out of the game but we kept a clean sheet, which is nice, and managed to pinch one on the break.

“We had a couple of players back in, which made a difference – a few playing their first game back – and we managed to hang on and deserved something out of the game.

“We have had about a five-week break and to be fair, the fixtures have been kind. The first two back have been kind to us.”

Mitchell, who played the sole striker role as Walters put five across the middle, scored the only goal of the game, latching onto a through ball from Liam Mortimer.

The versatile frontman beat the onrushing Almondsbury keeper before delicately lifting the ball over him and into the back of the net.

Devizes held onto the lead in no small part thanks to the saves of goalkeeper Matt Tilley, who took the man-of-the-match award.

“They played some good football but they never really hurt us too much,” Walters added.

“Our goalkeeper (Tilley) was man of the match for us. He made some good saves but the back four all had good games. I was pleased with the way we defended.”

Devizes will be looking to maintain their good form when they head to Bristol on Saturday to face eighth-placed Oldland Abbotonians.

Walters said: “They have been going quite well and every time you go away to a Bristol side, you are going to have a tough game. The boys are looking forward to it.

“They are going to be a difficult side but we have nothing to fear.”
