BRAVE Natalia Horne has released a heartfelt video on Facebook as she prepares to Brave the Shave in memory of her Mum, Elaine.

Miss Horne, 33, from Pewsham, is a barber at Gary Hatto’s Barber Co in Chippenham and will go under the razer on March 27 in support of the Alzheimer’s Society.

In her video Miss Horne describes Elaine, who was just 59 when she died, as a beautiful mother, who was one of a kind and with a heart of gold.

She said: “My mother passed away from Alzheimer’s four years ago this year so I’m doing it in memory of her and to help research and for families and carers as well.

“This disease turned her into somebody you wouldn’t even recognise.

“Everyone has been great, it’s going to be quite a shock. I have a large head and forehead, it’s normally hidden behind my hair so it’s not something I am taking lightly.”

Miss Horne’s brother, Luis Navarro, and her friends will be joining her at G. Hatto’s barbers in the centre of Chippenham at the end of March to help her raise awareness.

In the video, Miss Horne describes how she handled her mother’s diagnosis and steady deterioration whilst suffering from the disease.

A fall saw her mother spend time in hospital and she spent eight months in a care home before Alzheimer’s took her life.

Miss Horne also talks about the last few moments of her mother’s life and the courage needed to go and say goodbye.

She said: “One of the hardest things I’ll ever have to do in my life, it took me an hour and a half to go into the room.

“My brother was sitting there holding her hand at that time her brain had gone it was just her body.

“He had to talk me around to do it because I just physically sit there and watch my mother and best friend die.

“I’m glad I did sit there and held her hand, it petrified me but to know she had her children there on her last hours was hopefully comforting for her.”

And she said the support she has received since putting the video up on Facebook just a few days ago has been amazing.

“I think people were quite shocked to see my sensitive side, people have messaged me to say it’s a brave thing to do but my hair will grow back.”
