CALNE’S air cadets were treated to a presentation by the last remaining survivor of the Dambusters Raid last Thursday (Feb 11) at their base in Calne.

George "Johnny" Johnson recounted the daring Dambusters’ mission to an audience of cadets and fans. He was the bomb aimer of the Lancaster ED 825.

The cadets were transfixed as Mr Johnson regaled them with his stories, including being selected to join the 617 Squadron, receiving his flying medal and meeting the Queen.

CO Sqn Ldr Mike Webster said: “It was very humbling to be in the presence of a genuine hero, who held the attention of cadets, staff and visitors alike throughout the presentation.

“It was an experience that everyone in attendance will never forget.”

Lancaster ED 825 was one of six Lancaster bombers tasked with breaching the Sorpe Dam in 1943. Mr Johnson was tasked with guiding the bomb to its target and was successful at the 10th attempt.

Cadet Sergeant Lauren Cuggy said: “I really enjoyed the visit of Johnny Johnson. The way he told his story was not only interesting and very humbling but was also very inspiring”.

Mr Johnson finished his talk by giving the cadets some advice.

He said: “You should make the most of the opportunities you have in life, and do a good job that you feel happy doing.”
