MOTORISTS are being advised be careful on Wiltshire’s roads this morning as icy roads have caused a number of accidents.

A woman driver of a red Mitsubishi Colt has been taken to the RUH with hand injuries after her car overturned near the Westwood and Wingfield crossroads.

Five other vehicles have crashed, with a VW Polo flipping too, along the same stretch of road in separate incidents.

Frome Road was closed in both directions between Westwood Road and the A366 but is now open again.

In Bradford on Avon near Cumberwell, three vehicles have also crashed due to black ice and a further crashed occurred near Stoney Gutter in Trowbridge.

Driver Mark Pritchard, from Amesbury, who crashed near the Westwood and Wingfield crossroads said: “I was going to Bradford on Avon. I wasn’t going fast at all. I came round a slight bend and then I went into a skid and knocked over a 50mph sign.

“I was phoning the emergency services to let them know about the black ice when a red car lost control and overturned. The woman was screaming, it was terrible.”

PC Mark Wallace said: “The road conditions are treacherous. It is thick black ice. People should take great care with several roads freezing over.”

Ice is also affecting Whitehill Lane in both directions in Royal Wootton Bassett, near the Salt Spring Drive junction, with conditions said to be hazardous.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said primary A, B and some C roads, equating to 25 per cent of the county's roads, were gritted last night from 6.30pm.

"We always advise motorists to take care under icy conditions and always drive to the conditions," they said.
