ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low does not want his side to become complacent after they drew level at the top of the Southern Counties South table.

Following Bassett’s emphatic victory over Bradford on Avon last weekend, Low’s side went level on points with Midsomer Norton, only remaining behind their Somerset rivals on points difference.

However, Low is taking nothing for granted at this stage as he has learnt from experience that a title push does not end around the turn of the year.

Last season, the Ballard’s Ash side were in a similar position and fell away, ending 17 points behind champions High Wycombe in Southern Counties North.

The Bassett chief is going to stay hot on any signs of complacency from his troops as they prepare to host Frome on Saturday and will not the intensity of his players slip.

“As a club, we got ourselves into a position last season where we got near the top and we became complacent,” said Low.

“I hope we’ve learnt from that as a squad and we’re in stronger place to deal with it this time around.

“I think when we were up there last year, the players expected things to happen. We need to work harder now we are up there - other teams in the league are going to be gunning for us.

“Last week, Dave Hogg got stuck into for missing six kicks.

“For me, it’s good to see that sort of spirit in the team, that they are prepared to challenge each other to do better.

“We have to carry that confidence going into next weekend. We have come out of games on top.”

For the visit of bottom side Frome, Bassett continue to miss a number of players.

Although Low would prefer to have more numbers available, he is proud of the strides made by the club that mean competition for places is rife.

“We need to show the quality throughout the whole club,” added Low.

“Seven or eight are out in first team; Charlie I’Ansen and Kyle Lovell, Hamish Keith all unavailable. Gary Williamson is also carrying a niggle.

“But we’ve said all along it’s not about 18 payers. We’re trying to build more than that and now we have developed two squad that are capable.

“The development is coming through, the colts section is thriving, and it really helps with the depth.”
