WILTSHIRE Police has experiencing technical difficulties with its 999 and 101 call systems today.

A spokesman said just after 3pm: "As a result of the difficulties currently being experienced, all 999 emergency calls are being routed to Gloucestershire Police. However, all calls to our 101 number are not presently being connected to our call handlers.

"Wiltshire Police are asking the public to only use the 999 number if your call is an emergency. For non-emergency calls, please do not call 101 as this service is temporarily out of use.

"BT are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible and further updates will be provided via the media when appropriate.

"In the meantime Wiltshire Police are urging residents to stay safe and to check on elderly and other vulnerable residents within their communities. We would like to thank the public for their patience."

Just after 4pm, police updated their earlier annoucement saying: "Our 101 and 999 call systems have now been restored.

"Our 999 calls which were earlier being routed to Gloucestershire Police are now being handled within Wiltshire Police.

"All 101 (non-emergency) calls have been restored and are being handled by Wiltshire Police.

"Thank you for your on going support."
