WORK is set to begin building 27 new retirement apartments in Marlborough next spring.

Metal railings currently surround the former Clarke & Rodway Garage on Granham Hill, while preparations are made to demolish the site by contractors Shield Environmental Services

McCarthy & Stone had planning permission approved in February for the three storey development which includes 27 two-bed apartments and 29 parking spaces for those aged 55 and over.

A spokesman said: “We are making a site start at present with demolitions and site set up and preparation. The actual build will not begin until spring next year due to the amount of preparation required.”

The car wash business which was run behind the garage is thought to have relocated to Swindon.

While, Clarke & Rodway, which employed nine members of staff and started in Great Bedwyn in 1964, had hoped to move to new premises close to the town but were unable to secure a suitable alternative site.

Nick Clarke, 43, who took over management of the garage 12 years ago, said: “We closed and took voluntary liquidation in August.

“It came at a good time. Citroen and Peugeot have made it clear that little family dealerships in small towns do not feature in their long-term plans.

“We left on a positive note and I was able to give my staff good redundancy salaries. When I shook everyone’s hand on the Friday they all walked into new jobs on the Monday."

He added: “I’m relaxing and looking for the next opportunity, but not looking too hard. I spent 26 years at Clark & Rodway, to get a Saturday off is still nice and I am enjoying relaxing.”
