CROWDS of people packed the streets in Marlborough at the weekend to take part in the Marlborough Mop fair.

The sun shone down on the revellers whilst they enjoyed games of darts and trying their hand at the shooting range as well as rides like the teacups.

Mayor Margaret Rose said: “It was really enjoyable. We were blessed with some lovely weather. Claire Perry, MP, also turned up to take part.

“I had one of the showmen from the South West Showman’s Guild show me round the fair and look after me. I had a go at the shooting range, the first time I have ever picked up a gun, and it was fun. They also let me win at darts which was very kind.

“The nicest thing was the Guild presented me a cheque for £500 for my charity, the Brain Tumour Charity, which was incredibly generous. The Guild lost a showman over the last year to a brain tumour so they decided to support my charity.

“The showmen put on a very nice reception for previous mayors which was enjoyed by everyone. We presented flowers to previous president of the Showman’s Guild, Billy Whitelegg’s wife. The council and the town hold the showmen in affection, we never get any trouble.

“People really enjoyed the atmosphere and it was just such a lovely day.”

This weekend it is the turn of the Big Mop and the High Street and parts of Kingsbury Street and New Road will be closed from noon on Friday until 8am on Sunday.

The Mop takes place on the two Saturdays nearest to October 11 to be in line with the town’s charter given by King John in 1204.
