CHIPPENHAM Town continued their impressive pre-season form by putting National League South opponents Weston-super-Mare to the sword last night.

The match proved the mostly impressive of Town's pre-season friendlies to date and manager Mark Collier must have been pleased with how his Bluebirds side competed throughout the pitch with their higher league opponents last night.

Matt Jones set the scene after two minutes with a 25-yard shot that flashed across the face of goal. A minute later Andy Sandell's cross was met by the in rushing Ashan Holgate but his side-footed volley unfortunately flew into Luke Purnell's arms.

Weston replied with a Dale Grubb free kick that the home defence failed to clear and Grubb's follow-up shot was superbly saved by Kent Kauppinen at his near post.

Purnell then held James Guthrie's shot whilst Ryan Campbell played in Holgate whose rising shot just cleared the bar.

Similarly at the other end a Weston attack ended with Jason Pope firing high. Before the break Sandell had four chances to open the scoring as one shot was blocked by a defender for a corner, from which Mark Preece headed over.

Sandell also fired over, whilst a headed effort was also too high, and his low free kick beat the wall but went wide.

On 49 minutes Jones' free-kick rattled the Weston cross bar before Chippenham took the lead ten minutes later.

Guthrie swung in a cross from the left which went across the area where it was returned by Holgate for Sandell to head home.

Weston almost drew level two minutes later when James Kane's shot was stopped from entering the net when it inadvertently hit Scott Wilson.

On 73 minutes, substitute Luke Ballinger's shot was deflected behind for a corner. Ballinger took the flag kick himself and Preece firmly headed home for Chippenham's second.

The game became increasingly disjointed as both sides made several substitutions although a late header from Wilson cleared the bar.
