WILTSHIRE Police have named the two people killed in a car crash on the A36 near Crockerton as Westbury’s Philip Butler and Jennifer Jones.

Mr Butler, 61, was driving a red Ford Mustang east along the A36 when it collided with a Morrisons delivery lorry travelling in the opposite direction between the Crockerton and Heytesbury roundabouts at 4.30pm on Monday.

He and Ms Jones, 28, who was a rear seat passenger in the incident, both died from their injuries.

Originally born in Stoke on Trent, Mr Butler had been a vice-principal at Wiltshire College and had a love of cars, buying a Triumph Spitfire as his first car at the age of 17.

He graduated from Newcastle University with a BA and MA in geography and was an avid supporter of Stoke City Football Club.

His family said: “Phil was a devoted family man and cared dearly for them as well as having many friends worldwide.”

Ian Revill, director of Lackham but who worked at Wiltshire College with Mr Butler, said: “Phil was passionate about improving the experience for students and was energetic in the way he went about this mission.

“He had an unusual sense of humour and would never miss an opportunity to get Stoke City or his beloved Porsche into any conversation.

Ms Jones attended Bratton Primary School, Matravers School and graduated with BA joint honours in geography and archaeology from Liverpool University.

She became a tutor at Fairfield Farm College because she was passionate about supporting young adults with learning disabilities and was a keen animal lover, having recently bought a horse which she planned to compete in competitions with.

Her family said: “Jen had a huge group of friends who all say that she will be remembered for her infectious smile and wicked sense of humour.”

A tribute from Fairfield Farm College said: “Jenny was a beautiful person in every respect. Her infectious smile and laugh filled the cafe and reception every day.

“Her work with students was encouraging, kind hearted and enthusiastic and she was vibrant and caring towards everyone who had the privilege to know her.

“Jenny loved working at Fairfield, with the students and with the animals and students, past and present, are devastated at the sudden loss of her.”

Also involved in the collision on the A36 was 60-year-old Susan Jones, mother of Jennifer and partner of Philip, who was travelling as a front seat passenger in the Mustang.

She suffered minor injuries but was discharged from the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

A silver VW Golf, driven by a 58-year-old man from London, was also involved in the accident with the driver suffering minor injuries.

He was taken to the Royal United Hospital, Bath, but was discharged.

The driver of the lorry, a 69-year-old man from Weston-super-Mare, did not suffer injury.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
