CHIPPENHAM and District Artists have a free summer exhibition in the town until Saturday June 27.

Ninety pieces of art by 29 artists are on display in the Yelde Hall between 10.30am and 3pm today and tomorrow and 10-30am-2.30pm on Saturday.

Glyn Overton, of London Road, was for the second year in a row declared the winning artist.

Judge Jim Coleman chose her painting, In the Winter, and six others were highly commended.

Chippenham Mayor David Powell, who opened the exhibition, said: "I bought the winning painting last year, by the same artist, and that was also a different way of looking at something ordinary, very individual and creative.

"This year Marc Allum [from Antiques Roadshow] and I both wanted the same picture of a ballerina, but someone else bought it first.

"The exhibition showed off the talent of local artists very well."

Prue Backway, chairman of Chippenham and District Artists, said: "There is a variety of different mediums and subject matter." She said Chippenham and District Artists had 41 members and is open to new ones. See www.chippenhamartists.co.uk

The next Sunday meeting will be July 12, in St Catherine's Room of St Andrew's Church in 2.30pm, where Roger Backway will give an illustrated talk on the French Impressionists in Britain. Details from (01249) 658697.
