THE sun shone on the Cherished Vehicle Show and Farm Fun Day for the fourth year in a row.

More than 1,700 people and their families attended the event on the Allington Farm Shop field on Sunday, opened by the new Chippenham Mayor David Powell.

The event is expected to have raised £10,000 for Chippenham Lions charities.

It started out in 2012 with 100 classic cars and this year those attending got to see a record number of 240, including a Ford Model Y 1937, a 1950s Mercedes SL300 and a 1960s Jaguar 420.

Children also enjoyed sitting in the tractors and getting up close to the farm animals.

This year people got into costume to match the era of their cars. Thomas Peare-Harte was decked out in straw boater, waistcoat and pocket watch to match a Austin 10 Cambridge 1936, while military clad Nigel Peare was with a 1942 Dodge weapons carrier.

A Bob Astwood memorial trophy was introduced in memory of a Chippenham Lions Club member of 40 years who helped to organise the day and died at the end of last year.

Visitors and exhibitors voted on the day for the cherished vehicle they believed had the greatest appeal.

Mr Astwood's partner, Pam Ponting, presented the trophy to Roland Grazebrook of Colerne Classic Car Club, for his beautiful 1917 Lancia Theta.

Martin Horton of the Chippenham Lions said: "The day has grown year by year and 240 is the most cars we've had.

"We were a bit concerned when putting up the tents the day before in high winds. But on the day we had the perfect weather; we could not have hoped for better with sun and blue skies. Indeed, it was the fourth year we have been blessed with good weather.

"It was a wonderful day and the Chippenham Lions are very grateful to all those who attended and we hope they all had a good day. It was a hardworking day for us and the culmination of many months of preparation and all Chippenham Lions are proud to have been part of it especially as it has now become an established part of Chippenham life."
