MORE than 1,500 homes in Devizes were without power this afternoon due to a fault at the Dunkirk Hill substation.

Power to approximately 1,500 in the Devizes area went down at 11.20am due to a damaged transformer at the electrical substation.

Fire crews from Trowbridge and Devizes were called to reports of smoke at the substation but took no action and waited for SSE to arrive as the fire was out on arrival.

Areas affected by the outage were homes in Devizes, Rowde, Potterne, Great Cheverell and Seend.

A SSEPD spokesperson said: “This sort of incident is fairly rare as the transformers are very resilient.

“Apart from 185 homes in Devizes, power has now been restored and engineers are still onsite working on the repairs and hope to have the power back on to those affected by 5pm today.”

A customer had also reported electrical wires down in the Devizes area although this has not been confirmed as relating to the today’s power cut.
