THE streets were alive with the sound of music on Saturday as choirs from throughout the area took part in the Calne Spring Sing.

Calne Town Hall, the library and Marden House were packed throughout the day as 12 choirs entertained audiences with an eclectic mix of music.

The free event culminated in The Big Sing with all 12 choirs, visitors and audience members gathering at New Market Place to perform I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing and We All Stand Together (the frog song) by Paul McCartney.

Judy Edwards, community services manager at Calne Town Council, said: “It was amazing, we had 12 choirs including the Bath Gospel Community Choir, and it was a great sunny day, full of energy.

“There was a lot of the community there supporting it which was great, the market place was just full of people and we hope to do the same next year.”

The Spring Sing has grown from nine choirs last year to 12 on Saturday and featured performances from the Bath Community Gospel choir, New Voices, and Supernova among others.

Three schools also took part with St Dunstan CofEVC Primary, Priestly Primary and John Bentley schools all getting involved.

Alison Armstrong, music subject leader at St Dunstan, said: "It went really well, we had been rehearsing for quite a few weeks and they rose to the occasion.

"It was fantastic and the children liked having the opportunity to watch the adult choirs and there was lots of different types of music."

David Gillett from Calne Choral Society led the choral workshop on the stage in the town hall at lunchtime which was well received while Calne Lions provided refreshments.

Co-organiser Sarah Mouille, from Calne-based Synchronize, said: “It was lovely to have even more choirs involved this year than last year, word is spreading that this is a really good event.

“Choirs are coming from further afield which is good. The three venues are so close together it’s very easy to slip between them, people who are watching can see all the choirs and the people taking part can see different choirs.

“I think the big since had to be my highlight, getting 200 people together and singing the same tune was a really nice feeling.”
