CHILDREN of Charter School in Chippenham enjoyed a surprise assembly celebrating their good Ofsted rating.

Inspectors in February 2013, under Sarah Flack’s headship, said Charter required improvement but inspectors this time said Mrs Flack's determined leadership had since then driven up standards effectively.

They said significant improvement in the skills of senior leaders and governors had supported the head well in raising the quality of teaching and achievement, and attainment in reading, writing and mathematics was now above average.

The report reads: “A well-organised, warm and inviting introduction to school awaits both children and parents. As a result, children in the early years quickly gain confidence."

Pupils told inspectors they felt very safe and secure, with one saying, “We are safe wherever we go in school because our teachers look after us."

Mrs Flack said: “We are delighted the inspectors recognised that we have established an effective school and highlighted all the great things our school can offer. The positive comments made by the inspectors reflect on everyone in the Charter community.

"The inspection acknowledged that the school has a strong capacity for further improvement and we are united in our vision of becoming outstanding.”

She thanked the staff and governors for their ongoing commitment and support.

Catering manager Debbie Lethaby and her colleagues made a large cake for the special assembly, decorated with the school mascot of Ping the dragon.

School business manager Lyn Isherwood said: “As the children walked in and spotted the cakes and balloons, the hall was filled with oohs and aahs. The surprise and anticipation on their faces was a delight to see.”

Ofsted said Charter could improve further by providing more opportunities for pupils to develop a better understanding of the diversity of cultures in modern Britain, and ensuring pupils were given sufficient time to improve previous work.

Chair of Governors Stephen Webb said they were delighted with the report and committed to ensuring every child had the continuing opportunity to flourish.
