A SWINDON man is fighting for his life after being struck by a car.

Police say the 20-year-old was walking towards Swindon on the A420 Oxford Road when he was hit by an orange Nissan Primera car travelling in the same direction.

It happened a few hundred yards from the Longcot junction at 1am yesterday.

Police closed the road for around three hours while carrying out their investigations Officers say the man's family is at his bedside at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where it is understood he is being treated for serious head injuries.

The Oxford hospital has a specialist unit dealing with head injuries.

The incident is being investigated by Thames Valley Police who believe the incident was an accident.

There are reports that the man was walking in the road.

Sgt John Ellis, of Abingdon road police, said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw the collision or who saw the man or the car prior to the collision to come forward to help us establish what happened.

"The man is white, 6ft, slim, with shoulder-length dark hair and a small beard. He was wearing a black top, blue jeans, and black boots. If you saw him, then please get in touch."

The incident is the second serious accident on the A420 this year. Last month, Charmaine Pearce, 15, a student at Swindon's Churchfields School, died when she was struck by a car outside Besselsleigh School.

She had been visiting friends when she was hit by a Renault Clio, which was in turn hit by a second car.
